The Michael Jordan Effect: A Surprising Leadership Lesson

Just because someone is a superstar in one context doesn't mean that that person will excell in another context.

In fact, there is STRONG RESEARCH that indicates that "superstars" in one context are most often NOT "superstars" in another.

Case in point: Michael Jordan was one of THE best basketball players to ever to play the game. However, once he stepped off the basketball court and onto the baseball field, he was below average at best. Just because someone is a superstar in one context doesn't mean that that person will excel in your context.

In other words, beware of the Michael Jordan Effect: the simplistic idea that you can find, recruit, and hire a superstar who will excel in your context.

Need to find great people for your context but not sure where to look? Consider following in the steps of Jesus Christ--and start training/mentoring/discipling/coaching someone RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE who is currently remarkably unremarkable?

If that sounds like too much work--you may want to consider whose steps you are following after.

My school sends their interns to Catalyst each year. A leadership conference put on by Andy Stanley and others like him. This year their whole theme was focusing wholly on your strengths as individuals to add to your team's effectiveness; instead of the common paradigm that use should use your strengths and strengthen your weaknesses. Interesting thought. Get the podcasts if you can. Hybels, Stanley, Maxwell, and some other really good not so well known people were all there and offered some excellent points.

Levi...
I had no idea of the podcasts. I have a six hour trip to Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY, tomorrow (if I can still drive through all the snow we're supposed to get tonight)--so i downloaded 14 Catalyst podcasts to take with me for the drive... THANKS!

And I STILL think you are a better leader than Hybels, Stanley, and Maxwell... in your context... and think we ALL can still learn from them... but that they probably couldn't lead as well as you do in your context.

Who's Michael Jordan? Was he a pastor?

Hahahahaha!

Seriously, I think I am learning that mostly I examine myself to see if I am who I am suppose to be right now, and then I marvel that God chooses to open up doors for ME to do stuff.

It sure won't look like it does when "whoever" does it, but it's God through me, hopefully looking like God and me... ramble, ramble...

I don't want to grow up...
